Retailing of low standard of spices goes unnoticed by authorities

Kasur- Sale of low-standard of spices is at its peak across Kasur city and its surrounding districts. The main culprit being negligence of the district administration.

Reports of the survey conducted by the Nation revealed that, the substandard spices like turmeric, red and black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, cumin etc are being sold overtly at different markets of Kasur district.

There has been lack of effective food check and no proper action by the people of the authorities has encouraged these culprits to sell such substandard spices openly through retail outlets.

On the contrary, the sale of spices got a sudden boost with the start of winter as people in this season prefer to consume spicy foods items like samosas, pakoras, fish, fast foods, French fries and other food items.

As the demand of spices used in cooking of these edibles rise in winters, it provides food manufacturers with the chance to fulfill the market needs with the low quality of spices which they manufacture under the unhygienic and poor conditions.

Food manufacturers engrossed in such activities have reportedly established temporary small manufacturing units at their houses where they can prepare substandard spices without getting noticed by the food authority officials.

Sources have confirmed that toxic chemicals and colors are used for manufacturing such spices. Several cases of gastrointestinal diseases and digestive disorders have been reported in the city and nearby districts.

Due to negligence of health and food authority officials, situation has become worst. Several political and social organizations have demanded Saira Umar Deputy Commissioner to look into the matter and take strict action against the culprits.
