KARACHI - Ghazanfar Bilour, President, FPCCI has requested the Pakistani government to take off various duties that are imposed on import of leather levied under different SROs and quarantine requirements for the imports of raw hides and skins.
He was addressing a delegation of Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), it was led by Chairman Amanullah Aftab. He was accompanied by Gulzar Firoz, Ejaz Bhomal, Aziz Ahmed, Shafi Ahmed, Imran Sheikh. Former president FPCCI S M Muneer, Senior Vice President FPCCI Mazhar Ali Nasir and Vice President FPCCI Tariq Haleem along with the Secretary General FPCCI Dr Iqbal Thaheem also attended the meeting.
The delegation communicated the FPCCI President about the problems faced by leather sector of the country. The President of FPCCI said that due to additional regulatory duty put on import of various tanning chemical and quarantine requirements by the government is the main factor affecting the productivity of leather sector thus hampering leather exports of Pakistan.
He informed that leather sector is the 2nd largest export earning sector of the country that represents highly dynamic and value added industry along with job oriented sector. The leather sector may be facilitated subsidies in lab testing, matching grant for setting up effluent treatment plants, unilateral slashing down the rates of duty drawback on export of finished leather goods and accelerating the process of releasing DDB, Sales Tax, Income Tax and DLTL claims.
FPCCI President also said that the authorities instead of offering facilities to the tanning industries are imposing duties and conditions that creates problem for these leather industries. S M Muneer said that the government should concentrate more on export of leather and its products and take appropriate measures for the betterment of country’s export.
He informed that, despite the global recession and other national and international bottlenecks, the tanning industry of Pakistan is actively pursuing their export business thus the export of leather and its products are steadily increasing.
