BARGARH: A man threw pair of shoes at Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik when he was addressing an election meeting at Bargah district, the police informed. The CM escaped from the attack, but the shoes hit his personal security officer.
Police immediately grabbed the attacker and took him into the custody, while the Chief Minister was escorted safely.
The incident occurred at Khumbhari village in the Assembly constituency of Bijepur where Mr. Patnaik was addressing a meeting followed by a road show at Barpali. The local police have detained the man and is being interrogated. Bypoll elections for Bijepur is scheduled for 24th Feb.
Leaders of the opposition and the ruling party, both have condemned the incident.
"It is an unfortunate incident. It appears to be sponsored as the BJP is losing the election in Bijepur," said BJD vice president and Odisha minister S N Patro.
"We strongly condemn it. There is no place for violence in democracy," BJP spokesman Sajan Sharma said.
Debasish Patnaik, Congress spokesperson said this incident has set a bad example in Odisha. The incident happened just three weeks after a woman hurled eggs at Patnaik when he was addressing a public gathering in Balasore district during the Talasari beach festival on Jan 31.
