Wind Turbines growing larger to replace coal as primary power source


The Dutch Company Vestas Wind Systems have been making their wind turbines larger than the biggest jetliners so that these turbines can replace coal as a primary source of power generation. These turbines will be able to work off-shore and the bigger blades will succeed in harnessing steadier breeze so that more power generation is possible.

The policy is applicable to on-shore turbine technology with no restrictions on towers size or rotors and capacity of machines to generate electricity. The size of the turbines is not a problem for the company except the investments on the bigger turbines. At present, the largest off-shore project was a cooperation of Aarhus, Vestas and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Each turbine has a 80-meter blade and weighs 35 tons and is longer than an Airbus A380 passenger jetliner.

Vestas is now focusing on using fewer standardized elements in the manufacturing process making customization and price easier and cheaper respectively. The turbine system, Eventus focuses on on-shore models that will allow for an increase of about 26 percent energy production. An initial design will be put up by mid-2020 and anther turbine will be installed by the end of the year.

The off-shore wind industry will expand to a large extent by the next 10 years with installations reaching more than 150 megawatts by 2030. Vestas is planning to install 1.8 gigawatts in the United Kingdom very soon. The main agenda of Vestas is to replace coal so that the depletion of the non-renewable energy source is prevented somewhat.
