The upsurge in use of bamboo, for making clothes more durable than the cotton ones, will become a reason to worry for the cotton cultivators in India. China is thinking of moving forward with the plan and wants to reduce the consumption of cotton.
K Satyanarayana, Former Director, Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST), said “The Chinese are surging ahead in using bamboo fiber, which is stronger than cotton fiber and more importantly, the yield per hectare is high."
He also added that the fiber secured from bamboo will be stronger than that of cotton. Moroever, the yield of cotton is less than bamboo. In fact, cotton demands a high volume f fertilizer and pesticide. As per the statistics, cotton alone consumed 11% of pesticides produced in the entire world. He also explained that bamboo belongs to the grass family. It does not require pesticide or fertilizer.
PSS Sharma, a bamboo trader, said that bamboo demand has risen. He also said "However, restrictive laws on bamboo felling and transporting have forced the paper mills to shift from bamboo pulp to hard wood technology."
On the other hand, P Ramana Murthy, former scientist, agriculture department, stated "We need to look at eco-friendly and a viable alternative to cotton and, bamboo is definitely one of them. It is up to the government to take a decision."
It seems that bamboo can be ruling the garments market and cotton might have to face a downtime. The use of bamboo will be good for the environment too.
